Encompassing 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, Big South Fork National River, and Recreation Area protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. The area boasts miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs, is rich with natural and historic features, and has been developed to provide visitors with a wide range of outdoor recreational activities. Choose from whitewater rafting, rock climbing, over 200+ miles of horse trails, and miles of hiking trails leading to spectacular overlooks, waterfalls, rock bluffs and outcroppings, the river, and rushing creeks.
Pogue Creek Canyon is a 3,000-acre natural area located on the northern Cumberland Plateau in Fentress County. It is contiguous to parts of Pickett State Forest and very near Pickett CCC Memorial State Park. The area is named for Pogue Creek which, along with its tributaries, forms and traverses the deep, magnificent gorge that makes this area so special. Pogue Creek is a tributary of the Wolf River, which empties into the Cumberland River. The area has abundant, immense, sheer bluffs and cliffs that provide wonderous displays of exposed, reddish-orange, and yellow layers of sandstone. Multiple rock houses and sandstone formations occur along the hiking trail and provide astonishing, picturesque rock structures to marvel at and photograph.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park lies within the 19,200-acre Pickett State Forest, and is adjacent to the massive 120,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. In 1933, the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company donated nearly 12,000 acres of land to the State of Tennessee to be developed as a forest recreational area. Initial development of the area by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) occurred between 1934 through1942. The CCC constructed hiking trails, five rustic cabins, a recreation lodge, a ranger station, and a 12-acre lake. The park memorializes and preserves the unique work of the CCC who first developed the park.
In 2015, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park and Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area earned Silver-tier International Dark Sky Park designation. It became the first state park in the Southeast to gain this prestigious recognition. Visitors can enjoy sweeping, rich views of the night sky similar to those found in many of the Western states

Catoosa Wildlife Management Area is a large game-management area on the Upper Cumberland Plateau in Morgan, Cumberland, and Fentress counties in Tennessee in the United States. It comprises 96,000 acres of wildland administered by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). The Management Area is funded by hunters and fishermen, and is popular with all outdoors enthusiasts, including backpackers, and whitewater rafters. It has many trails for hiking, of which the most notable is the Cumberland Trail. It also has gravel roads and dirt track four-wheel-drive roads for motorized exploration. Catoosa ranges from gently rolling hills to some of the most rugged and extreme terrain in the country. Many rivers and streams have cut deep canyons into the Cumberland Plateau and Cumberland Mountains of the Management area allowing for beautiful vistas.
Hiking opportunities are plentiful with over 110 miles of gravel road and 150 miles of logging roads. Some short hiking trails are present. The Obed Wild and Scenic River runs through Catoosa and can be explored from road crossings.
